A 13-year-old student of the Diamond Secondary School was on Friday morning rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing three stab wounds to the abdomen by a fellow student.
The weapon was a pair of scissors. The teen, Andrew Benn, of 6 Friendship Cane-Field East Bank Demerara, was stabbed around 9:30 hours.
His father, Clement Benn, told Kaieteur News that he received a telephone call from the Diamond Hospital informing him that his son was a patient there.
The father further explained that he immediately left his job and ventured to the hospital. He said that after he arrived at the hospital he saw his son in a semi-conscious state.
The father further said that his son’s abdomen had three puncture wounds.
The father said because of his son’s serious injuries doctors at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre transferred him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
He said that the doctors who are treating his son told him that his left lung has collapsed and fluids are filling it up.
He also said that his son has lost a lot of blood.
“They tell me that his lungs are filling up with blood and his condition is very serious” the father explained.
A tube was inserted into his abdomen, to aid in the draining of the fluids; he was also receiving intravenous drips.
The father said his son who is the second of five children was never involved in any incident before.
He opined that parents need to speak to their children about violence, further stating that a lot of children in the school system are violent.
Up to press time the child was a patient of the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Hospital. Kaieteur News was unable to contact anyone from the Diamond Secondary School.
