Some $5.4 billion was allotted to the Housing and Water sector, to “accelerate” the People’s Progressive Party’s programmes aimed at providing access to affordable housing and to ensure the increased coverage of water supply.
According to the 2009 Mid-Year Report, approximately $1.9 billion represented a 29.6 percent increase on the 2008 mid year expenditure.
This increase was attributed to the early completion of designs and the more timely approval of projects.
As stated in the report, $657.9 million was expended to increase the occupancy and construction rate in existing and new housing schemes, by the first half of the year.
An improvement in the infrastructure of not only housing schemes, but also squatter settlements, and the provision of security in those areas were also included in the billion dollar expenditure.
Approximately $1.2 billion was spent by the first half of the year to continue the progress of the water sector. Increased water coverage and improved water supply were among the projects enhanced by the billion dollar provision. Millions of dollars were also distributed to ensure the improved efficiency in the water sector and the reduction of loses in the production and distribution of potable water.
Portions of $50 million each were distributed to the Linden Water Programme (LWP) and the Hinterland Water Programme (HWP), of which $7.9 million and $8.3 million respectively were distributed for the procurement of leak repair materials.
The construction of concrete trestles for the LWP and HWP were also included.
Some 7,000 residents in Wismar Housing Schemes, Amelia’s Ward and Blue Berry Hill are to benefit from the Linden Programme, while some 8,000 residents from Mabaruma, Port Kaituma, Ituni, Orealla and Siparuta are listed to benefit from the Hinterland Programme.
