Half centuries by former West Indies Under-19 batsman Gajanand Singh and opener Andrew Lyght Jnr. guided New Line Cavaliers to victory over an Essequibo select X1 in a feature 40 overs cricket match sponsored by New Line Acqa Farm Sunday last at the Anna Regina Community Center Ground on the Essequibo Coast.
The Essequibo select X1 won the toss and elected to bat first watched by a fair size home crowd and lost Vishwanauth Lall who was run out without scoring in the first over. They then lost a few more quick wickets before Dinesh Joseph who top scored with 36; former national Under-15 player Oyono Sampson 32 and Guyana Under-19 vice captain Royston Alkins 28 ensuring they posted a respectable 164 all in the 38th overs.
Anthony Ifill 3-34 and Andrea Percival 2-33 were the main wicket takers for New Line Cavaliers who in reply lost an early wicket before Gajanand Singh who played some lovely shots both sides of the wicket before he was caught for 70 and the attacking Andrew Lyght Jnr. who made 56 batted sensibly as their team won the game in the 32nd over ending on 165-6. Vishwanauth Lall took 2-32 for the home team.
On Saturday at the same venue New Line Cavaliers were again victorious against the same opponents in a Ten10 affair which was originally set to be a Twenty20 game. The host team batted first and mustered 76-7 off their allotted overs. Norman Fredericks made top scored with 22 and skipper Ramesh Narine 16 as Balram Samaroo grabbed 3-14 and former West Indies all-rounder Mahendra Nagamootoo 2-19.
Cavaliers rattled their way to 77-3 in just 8.4 overs, Andrew Lyght Jnr. Leading the way with 36 and Chiem Gittens 28.
The New Line Cavaliers team collected two trophies for winning both games along with $275,000. Gajanand Singh received the man of the match award for the 40 over game while Lyght Jnr. collected a similar prize for the Ten10 affair.
The Essequibo team received $125,000 for both matches while the sponsor New Line Acqa Farm donated 75,000 to the Essequibo Cricket Board.
