Ranks at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary, were last night questioning a 22-year-old Albousytown man who is said to be a close friend of one of the men who police say is wanted for a spate of attacks in the city.
The man, Muammar Jabbar, of James Street, Albouystown, was taken into custody at around 13:30 hrs yesterday.
Jabbar’s father, Abdul Jabbar, said that police have told him that they are checking reports that his son was seen in the company of a wanted man. According to Mr. Jabbar, another police officer also said that investigators had received reports that his son had harboured a wanted man.
However, they declined to say who the fugitive might be. “I would swear to Allah…it’s nothing of the sort,” the father said.
Mr. Jabbar confirmed that his son is a close friend of Charles Clarke; one of the six men who police said is wanted for arson at public buildings, robbery, shootings and murder.
But the detained man’s parents are adamant that he is not a criminal.
According to the man’s parents, he is employed as a sailor with the Barama Timber Company. Mr. Jabbar said his son was at sea on a Barama tug when the attacks at the police stations and the other public buildings occurred.
Mr. Jabbar also said that Clarke has been out of the country for some time.
Charles Clarke’s mother, Lorraine Clarke, had also told Kaieteur News that her son was in French Guiana when the health Ministry was torched.
She said that her son left for Trinidad in October 2008, but returned to Guyana because his extension had expired. She said that her son left for French Guiana last May.
Clarke said that her son works as a construction worker with his cousin, Shawn Adams, the brother of Fire Chief Marlon Gentle.
