By Franklin Wilson
It’s now down to the final four in the 2009 edition of the NAMILCO Football Festival, the annual fund-raising tournament organised by the Fruta Conquerors Football Club with major sponsorship from the National Milling Company of Guyana, NAMILCO.
Most of the pretenders have been sent packing and it’s now down to the final four as they seek the only two available spots for the championship game.
Tonight’s feature game brings together the resurgent BK International Western Tigers who are gradually returning to ominous form. The Tigers, one of the most exciting teams in the city have always had good potential but have always under performed. But in recent times, they have been working hard at being a more consistent side at winning, troubling signs for their opponents, New Amsterdam United, the top side in the Ancient County of Berbice.
Western will be led by the inform Devon Millington, fresh from leading the Senior ‘Golden Jaguars’, Guyana’s flagship team, to their first ever International win, The Suriname Independence Cup where Guyana defeated Suriname, The Netherlands Antilles and French Guyana.
Millington scored the winning goals against Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles 1-0 in each instance; it was also his first International goals at the senior level. The wiry forward will be the main weapon in the Tigers’ bid to win tonight along with strike partner Nedd Fraser.
Captain Dillon Fraser will marshal the defence along with 17 year-old Colin Nelson who was also a part of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ historic win and Sherman David. The midfield will be under the control of Renault Fraser, Dwayne Ali Ryan Thomas and Vashal Cantzlaar while the man between the uprights will be Derrick Carter.
New Amsterdam United (NAU), back to back division-one champions in Berbice will be no pushovers and according to their Coach Lennox Adams, “We have been preparing for this occasion and we will definitely do our best on the night.”
This is the first time that NAU has reached the final four of a tournament in the city and their bid for a win tonight will be led for forwards Adrian Adams and Kelvin Joseph who both netted hat-tricks against Victoria Kings whom they defeated in a thrilling match up. Goalkeeper Dirk Henry, who also played a critical role in the win, will again be the final line of defence for the team from the East.
Former national Colin Bowry will lead from the midfield while other players expected to feature for NAU are Devon James Antonio Bhikham, Elroy Lewis, Rondel Hazel and Delroy Ferdinand.
The first semi-final pits Sunburst Camptown against Santos who will be aiming to ride on their success of returning to the Premier League ranks after finishing as the number two team in the Western Union division-one league to winners, Riddim Squad.
Santos Coach Bilaal Nantambu in an invited comment said that the chances of his young team, with an average age of 18 are just as good as Camptown. “This is a young team that has been playing well over the past months and will give a good account of themselves.”
Nantambu also disclosed that their biggest weapon is the fact that other teams have underestimated them {Santos}.
At the helm is Captain Ellery Williams who will find able support from Michael Pedro, who ended as the highest goal scorer in the Western Union division-one league, Jamal Downer, Jevon Gibson, William Europe, Stefan Peters, Trevor Lewis, Dexter Arthur, Samuel Dey, Joseph Payne, Travis Garraway and custodian, O’Neil Heywood.
Camptown, are no strangers to this kind of atmosphere and while they will not be taking their opponents for granted, will be aiming for a win this evening.
Their charge will be led by the strike duo of Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington and Telson McKinnon along with the veteran Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod and Captain Orlando Gilgeous, Lance Rolston, Reshawn Sandiford another member of the successful ‘Golden Jaguars’ side, Bevon ‘Chinie’ Moseley and goalkeeper Richie Richards.
