Scrabble players wind down activities for fiscal year
As the end of the year draws closer, the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) have unveiled their itinerary to bring the curtains down on a highly successful year. Activities commence this Saturday, November 14 with the drawing of the raffle, launched to facilitate national scrabble champion, Abigail McDonald’s participation in the World Scrabble Championships in Malaysia later this year.
This drawing would be staged in front of Courts Main Street headquarters, simultaneously with a cake sale, organized to augment funds in the association’s continued fund raising drive.
President of the GASP, Moen Gafoor recently unveiled his organization’s plans pertaining to the raffle and other pertinent scrabble issues. He said that all items at the cake sale would be sold at an affordable price and he is urging the general public to support the event.
Meanwhile, the executive of GASP convened last Sunday evening and discussed issues pertaining to the Bi-annual Caribbean Tri-Nations tournament slated for Trinidad & Tobago from April 2-5 next year. A decision was taken to field an 8 man team to the event.
Gafoor said that in an effort to give persons vying for selection a fair chance of making the team, the organizers have increased the number of tournaments left for the year. To this effect players would now contest for honours in 4 other competitions by the end of December and one other in early January. Following these tournaments, the team would be selected. “We feel this is a fair number of tournaments for persons to give it their best shot,” Gafoor intimated.
Executives of GASP have also laid down some basic ground rules pertaining to eligibility for the aforementioned competition. According to Gafoor, inactive players, or those that are absent from tournaments for a minimum period of 6 months will not be eligible for selection unless they compete in at least 1 tournament prior to team selection.
Players devoid of participation in GASP organized tournaments will be struck from the ratings graph. Should this rule be enforced, the affected player can only have their rating reactivated by virtue of competing in at least one tournament.
