Stolen raw gold….
– police accused of foot-dragging
A Brazilian miner is not too happy with the way the police are carrying out investigations into the theft of more than 20 ounces of raw gold in which three police ranks have been implicated.
The three ranks from the West Demerara Anti-Crime Unit, who were initially placed under close arrest, are reportedly back at work.
They are accused of siphoning off 17 ounces of raw gold which they had recovered during investigations last week.
Senior police officials had confirmed the arrests and had vowed to ensure that no stones are left unturned to see that justice prevails.
This newspaper understands that the gold, which belonged to Brazilian miners, was stolen at Parika.
The Police Anti-Crime Unit on the West Demerara was contacted and having been provided with information on the suspected thief, carried out their own investigations.
According to police sources, the ranks arrested the suspect and recovered all the stolen gold.
Kaieteur News understands that two boys had stolen the bucket with the gold at Parika and had taken it to the home of a woman.
They were arrested but were released by the police under questionable circumstances.
The bubble burst when the owners of the gold confronted the two boys who disclosed that the police had released them after taking away most of the gold.
During investigations it was revealed that the boys had given two ounces of the stolen gold to the woman in whose home the gold was taken initially.
Further investigations led to a taxi driver who claimed that he was given 12 pennyweight of the raw metal by the police to keep his mouth shut.
This newspaper was reliably informed that the two boys handed over to investigators a cell phone and a television set which they had bought with their portion of the money, while the woman also handed over a cell phone.
She told investigators that she had taken the rest of her portion to a goldsmith to make jewellery.
The taxi driver has also reportedly handed over the gold he had received from the policemen.
Reports are that they have all identified the police ranks involved. However no gold was found in the possession of the ranks.
But the real owner of the gold is frustrated that the police have done little to recover the rest of the stolen metal.
A source close to the owner indicated that the police have not searched the homes of the policemen nor have they contacted the goldsmith who the woman claimed she gave her portion to.
The source said that they are willing to assist the police with a metal detector so that the investigations could come to a speedy conclusion.
