Government Member of Parliament, Anil Nandlall, during a recent press briefing under the auspices of the Guyana Bar Association said that what is needed in Guyana is a Constitutional Court.
He explained that such a court would be used to deal expeditiously with matters specifically dealing with constitutional breaches.
However Leader of the Alliance for Change, Raphael Trotman, recently told this newspaper that such a court will not help if the government does not respect judicial orders.
“We need to see a general respect for the rule of law…It is not as simple as adding another court.”
People’s National Congress Reform leader, Robert Corbin, at his most recent press briefing, said that a major example of a total disregard for a Court Order was demonstrated by former President, the late Janet Jagan.
He had explained that shortly before she was secretly and swiftly sworn in as President, she threw the Court Order over her shoulder in full view of the nation by way of national television. Attempts were made to evict the Marshal from State House.
According to Corbin, given that display at the highest level of the nation, it was not surprising that the PPPC Administration continued to preside over the continuous breach/violation of Court Orders; the abuse of the rules and regulations governing the State for discriminatory and other purposes; the escalation of corruption and other illegalities in every aspect of national life; the denial of just and legitimate rights of many citizens; the violation of human rights by institutions and agents of the State; and, the breach of agreements and commitments made by the Government to political parties, trade unions, the private sector, international organizations and Governments.
