Dear Editor,
It was a black Friday for Barbados at the Albion Sports Complex. Playing at the venue which hosted the first one day international in the West Indies (1977), Ryan Hinds men had no counter for the merciless hometown boy Narsingh Deonarine.
Deonarine whose maiden regional one day ton propelled the land of many waters to a commanding seven wicket victory, was not born when Roy Fredericks started the Berbice show with a belligerent (119) against the Leeward Islands at the ARG ground in St Johns (1980) that innings propelled Guyana to (327) and their first regional triumph. Nine years later another left hander Clayton Lambert emulated Frederick’s feat with a stroke filled unbeaten (113) against the Leeward Island at Hampton Court Essequibo (1989).
Lambert again continued the Berbice show in (1997) this time with a murderous (151) against Barbados at Bourda. Please note this innings is still the highest by a Guyanese at the regional one day level and is only bettered by the Windward Islands Dawnley Joseph (153).
Albion’s Sewnarine Chattergoon continued the left handed trend with an undefeated (103) against Antigua & Barbuda at Bourda (2001) and in 2005 he joined Roy Fredericks as the only Guyanese batsmen with centuries in regional one day finals (119), condemned Barbados to defeat in the KFC cup finals at Bourda.
Rose Hall Town Sports Club’s Royston Crandon halted the left handed dominance when he became the first Guyanese to score a regional one day century on debut (105) against the Windward Islands in Grenada in (2007).
Now that Narsingh has walked that road let’s see who is next.

Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
