Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack on Friday, dispatched a file advising that charges be instituted against Guyana Teachers’ Union President, Colwyn King. Yesterday, she said that her recommendation is that be charged with carnal knowledge of a girl between the ages 15-16 years.
Mrs Ali-Hack told this publication that King’s actions are contrary to section 691 of the Criminal Law Offences Act chapter 8:01 and that he should be placed before the court to answer the charge.
President of the Guyana Teachers Union, King was arrested on October 14, spent the night in police custody and released on $100,000 bail after a teenaged girl levelled charges of being sexually involved with him at a Princes Street Hotel.
Police sources said that if convicted he could be sentenced to at least seven years in jail.
Police sources said that the file was probably sent to the officer in charge of Crime then to the Police Commissioner then it will arrive at ‘A’ Division Commander Leroy Brummell’s desk for action.
When Commander Brummell was contacted yesterday he said the file had not reached his desk but noted that he will be acting on the order as soon as it does.
The police reportedly collected statements from the various locations that King allegedly visited with the teen.
Following this saga on October 15 the hierarchy of the Guyana Teachers’ Union in support of King made it clear that the members were standing by King. During a press conference GTU General Secretary, Coretta Mc Donald, expressed the view that the allegations against King were fabricated.
“We believe that Colwin King is a man of integrity. He has been there championing the cause of teachers and children; what has been said are mere allegations.”
The GTU President was arrested after a 15-year-old girl alleged that King had sexual intercourse with her at a hotel after buying her a meal on October 6.
According to the allegations, on the night in question King saw the girl, a Sophia resident, walking along Sheriff Street, in the vicinity of the seawalls.
It is alleged that he drove up alongside and enquired of her well-being and allegedly offered to get her something to eat, as she was hungry.
Police sources said that the girl claimed that she was at home alone in Sophia when the area was hit by a power outage. Police Commissioner Henry Greene had earlier said that the girl left her home because she had a quarrel with her mother.
But according to the teen, she decided to take a walk because she was afraid to be at home alone in the darkness.
Both King and the teen had a confrontation at the East La Penitence police station, where the teen allegedly identified him.
