– Six weeks and police showing no interest
Cynthya Latchman, 15, of lot B Best Bowenville, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, who was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend on Sunday, 20th September last, is not pleased with the action taken by the police so far.
Latchman was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on the day of the stabbing and was released two days later.
This Newspaper contacted Latchman and she related her distress at the way investigators are handling the case with regards to her attacker.
“Tajnaught Shivmangal (the ex-boyfriend) was not arrested and remains a free man walking the road although many complaints were made to the police at Vreed-en-Hoop Police station many times” said Latchman.
According to Latchman, who recalled the painful ordeal, “I was going by my cousin in Crane in a car on the Vreed-en-Hoop Public Road and my ex-boyfriend saw me in the car and stopped it, he thought it was a taxi and I was pulled out. Upon seeing this, the driver drove away. “He then told me to walk to a red car nearby or else he would juk me up”.
During the ordeal, Latchman tried to resist.
“Then I saw a knife in his hand but I could not remember seeing where he pulled it from, however, he then began to cut me about my body and eventually he stabbed me in my belly,” latchman told this newspaper.
She was also stabbed in her neck and fell unconscious after seeing the blood squirting from her wounds.
When she regained consciousness she felt the knife in her belly and pulled it out. She again lost consciousness and later realised that she was in the hospital. The parents of Shivmangal contacted the Criminal Investigation Department of Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station and suggested to the police a settlement.
“His relatives then called my cell phone and were verbally abusive on many occasions. The last I heard Shivmangal would be leaving the country to go Trinidad soon and he told persons that my family should not even follow the matter up because he would be out of the country in a little while,” the woman told this newspaper.
“I would really like him to pay for doing this to me, I am always in pain and he doesn’t even care” said Latchman
The two had a one year relationship that went sour after Latchman’s father decided to put a stop to the communication between the two. This came as a result of the many violent encounters in which the 15-year old would be severely assaulted.
The alleged attacker became angered by this and resorted to threatening Latchman on several occasions. Despite her father’s efforts to keep him away from his daughter, the enraged ex-boyfriend persisted in communicating with Latchman and was verbally abusive.
Several complaints were made by the sister to police, resulting in his arrest on two occasions, however, nothing came out of the arrests.
The sister, Andrea Latchman, said that a cousin of the attacker known as ‘Terry’ had prompted Shivmangal to kill her (Cynthya Latchman) and then commit suicide on several occasions.
