First and 3rd Division seven-a-side scheduled
The Second Annual Kevin Worrell Memorial basketball seven-a-side competition will be on Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall where first and third division clubs will play for the Championship trophy and a cash incentive.
Each Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) sanctioned club is allowed to field one First Division and one Third Division team this year as opposed to the ‘Open’ format that was used in the inaugural year, last year.
“The National Sport Commission has been extremely grateful to us in allowing us to take the tournament indoors with giving us access to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. We want to say thank you to them,” Robert Cadogan said yesterday.
The GABA Secretary, who is also Head Coach of the Courts Pacesetters Basketball Club and National Coach, said that the usage of the Sports Hall will give a lot of credibility to the tournament that was initiated outdoor last year.
Kevin Worrel, a former Courts Pacesetters player, collapsed suddenly on Burnham Court on October 5 last year and was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital later that same day. He was 21 years old at the time of his death.
The Georgetown sub-association announced a tournament in his honour, which was held on the Burnham Court. Nets Basketball Club won the inaugural competition and will look to defend their title against a plethora of teams Sunday.
