Police were last night questioning an army captain, a corporal and a private after nabbing them at Parika with high-powered weapons.
The ranks were detained some hours after being spotted in a boat with a 150 horsepower engine near Leguan, Essequibo. Police sources said that the boat belongs to a Pomeroon man suspected to be an influential figure in the criminal underworld.
It is believed that the soldiers had travelled from the Pomeroon and were up to some nefarious activity when they were held. Kaieteur News was told that the ranks were in civilian clothing, and did not immediately identify themselves as members of the Guyana Defence Force.
They were subsequently identified by an army lieutenant colonel who visited the Parika Station.
Kaieteur News understands that the drama began yesterday morning when residents of Leguan spotted the trio on the island.
The residents became suspicious and contacted the police, but decided to confront the men before the police came.
By the time the police arrived, the trio had departed in the boat. However, police received information that the vessel was heading for Parika and were able to arrest the men when they arrived.
Yesterday’s arrest appears to be the latest incident of corruption within the Guyana Defence Force.
It was just two months ago that three Coast Guard ranks were implicated in the abduction and murder of 24-year-old Bartica resident Dweive Kant Ramdass.
It is alleged that Ramdass, who was employed with a gold and diamond buyer, was travelling to Bartica with $17M in cash for his employer when the ranks took him off the vessel in the vicinity of the Parika Stelling.
After relieving their victim of the cash, the Coast Guard ranks allegedly killed Ramdass and dumped him in the Bonasika Creek. And a few weeks ago, an army lieutenant was implicated in the sale of a quantity of
quantity of 17.62×39 assault rifle ammunition.
This occurred after police arrested a civilian in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market with the ammunition.
At the time, the lieutenant, who is still to be located, was on annual leave pending disciplinary action relating to another incident. He has since been dismissed.
