For almost one week now the Guyana Oil Company (GUYOIL) has been forced to procure fuel from other companies in order to meet the fuel needs of its customers. This newspaper was informed that GUYOIL last received a modest supply of fuel about two weeks ago. Early last week fuel levels of gasoline and dieseline became exhausted, prompting the management of the fuel entity to replenish its stock with purchases from Sol Guyana Inc. and the Texaco Terminals.
It was related that the situation was not caused by a delay in the arrival of a fuel vessel but rather due to the rehabilitation of the terminal’s jetty, a process which according to reports could have affected the offloading of fuel had it arrived during the works. This newspaper was unable to contact any management officials yesterday for a comment on the fuel situation.
According to a source close to the operation of the terminal, management was aware of the need for the repairs to the jetty, thus could have procured extra fuel at the last purchase.
However, this newspaper has learnt that a fuel vessel may arrive in Guyana by tomorrow and is likely to offset the current challenge.
GUYOIL is known to sell fuel at a reduced cost when compared to the other fuel companies, thus has attracted many customers over the years. Another known fact too is that the other fuel terminals are pressured whenever GUYOIL has a shortage.
