Drayton, Daniels, Joseph, Graham also outstanding

Nisa Allen continued her ascendancy to the zenith of junior sprinting when she destroyed the threats of rival and clearly pre-competition favourite, Shanna Thornhill yesterday in a dominant performance that landed three gold medals.
Allen won the 100m, 200m and 400m Girls’ Under-20 races relegating Thornhill to chase in second in the 200m and 400m when North Georgetown held their Inter-Zone contest at Guyana Defence Force Base Camp Ayanganna Ground.
Kim Chan had placed second behind Allen in 100m while Keanna Gordon finished third in the event that Allen won in 12.3 seconds. Allen won the 200m in 26.09 and the 400m in a gutsy 59.19 that sent a clear message yesterday.
Allen had waited in the shadows of both Thornhill and former national schools champion, Nadine Rodrigues. However, the strong, athletic and tall sprinter understood that it was in her purview to shine and she did it emphatically.
Thornhill returned 28.04 for second in the 200m and 1:03.8 in the 400m to usher in a new era in schools’ athletics. Junita Hooper was third in the 200m with Candya Glasgow third in the 400m that was definitely an entertaining event. It seems as though the competition was a forum for settling all the
disputes related to who is the best junior schools athlete in District 11. Phillip Drayton also ensured that his score was settled against longstanding rival, Eon Campbell. Drayton played cat-and-mouse down the back-straight in the Under-20 Boys 400m before surging ahead on the last turn and taking a commanding lead on the homestretch after the bulky Campbell had led for about 250m in the race.
Drayton finished in a fast 50.5 seconds while Joshua Griffith placed second in 51.9 with a fading Campbell cruising in third in 53.4. Drayton reportedly also won the 800m race but results for that event were unofficial up to press time.
Triston Joseph doubled up in the Under-20 Boys’ 100m and 200m races in all no-contests when he blasted his way to 10.8 in the 100 and 22.01 in the 200m. Kareem Critchlow was second in the 100m with Darwin Brown ending third.
Jamaal Henry was second in the 200m with Jamaal Darrel third. There was no question at the beginning of the race that threatened the final outcome for Joseph who has established himself as the premier male junior sprinter.
Ayanna Graham and Shemaine Daniels also registered up doubles when a visibly injured Graham won the Under-16 Girls’ 100m and 400m races with Daniels duplicating the feat in the Under-14 Girls’ category at the Defence Force venue.
Graham had won the 100m in 12.3 seconds as Faith Taylor finished second and Shawana Caesar third; Graham won the 400m in 1:08.9 with Shebiki Beaton second and Thamani Atkinson third. She competed with a bandaged ankle.
Daniels defeated her twin sister Shequan in the 100m with 12.6 seconds as Ashley Tascher finished third. She returned later to also win the 400m with Tascher taking second and Shequan third. They were expected to also run the 200m.
