The University of Guyana (UG) is now equipped with a new ‘knowledge centre’ thanks to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The centre was established mainly to house all publications from PAHO/WHO.
The information available consists of public health and issues related to the health of people.
A variety of books and audiovisual materials can be found in the knowledge centre.
At the opening ceremony, which was held in the UG library, PAHO Country Representative Dr. Kathleen Israel said that the centre was first located at the PAHO office in Brickdam and had remained there for the past 17 years.
However, PAHO decided to move the centre to UG, when an analysis was done on the utilization of the centre and it was found that it was mainly used by students from the University of Guyana.
The centre was then relocated to the library of UG to make it more accessible to students, teachers and professors.
“We are going to be monitoring the operations of the centre…We are going to be looking at the utilization, we are going to look at the benefits that could accrued to users and how valuable the service is provided,” Dr. Israel said.
She added also that this is the first time that PAHO has arranged with a University to house the centre.
While the services are an improvement from the past, Dr. Israel said that PAHO is constantly looking at ways to improve the scientific information base as it relates to Guyana.
As such, the Pan American Health Organization has been engaging the Ministry of Health, National Library and the University of Guyana in the establishment of a virtual health library.
According to the Country Representative, the library will allow for a depository of health information specific to Guyana so that users anywhere in the world, through a portal that will be established in Guyana can access information about Guyana.
Guyana also through the use of the same portal can access public health information from other members in the virtual library network.
Dr. Israel added that PAHO is trying to move away from paper source knowledge to electronic source of knowledge, which essentially makes it easier for students.
“We are going to be looking at ways of improving and we are going to be looking at other options that will enhance the knowledge base and will make it more attractive and easy for users to access.”
Registrar of UG, Vincent Alexander, explained that students can no longer complain that they cannot do research due to the lack of access to information, since a wealth of information is now accessible at the centre.
“This is a centre for all Guyanese to be able to come and to access information on the health sector throughout the world.”
He added that the knowledge centre is a typical example of the standards being enhanced at the University of Guyana.
