The Annual Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Festival was launched yesterday, during a simple ceremony held, at the GCC Pavilion.
The competition, which has been in existence since 2004, will be staged from December 3-6 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The launching saw in attendance President of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) Phillip Fernandes, Treasurer Devin Hooper, Demerara Distillers Ltd Brand Representative Alexis Crawford, Ansa McAl PRO Dharshanie Yussuf, member of the Local Organising Committee Troy Peters and Ansa McAl’s Nigel Worrell.
Speaking at the occasion, Fernandes said that since the tournament’s inception it has been a great success and even today remains the sole competition that attracts the widest cross section of teams across the region.
Fernandes added that the tournament has quickly evolved into the mainstay beverage of hockey that resonates on the tongues of players in and out of the region that usually produces a high quality along with enjoyable social activities during the teams stay.
Apart from main sponsor DDL, other notable contributors include Ansa McAl, DeAbreu Creations, Igloo Ice-Cream and Flora Margarine among others.
The GHB President also thanked the management of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, the Ministry of Sport for making the facility available for the Festival.
He said that in the absence of an artificial surface, the access of a quality indoor facility is crucial for the survival of the sport locally.
Also coming in for praise were the Guyana Olympic Association, who according to Fernandes has always supported the Board’s endeavours and the Guyana Police Force, another entity that has been offering assistance throughout the event’s existence.
Crawford in her remarks said that DDL has always been supportive of the development of sports across the country and when approached by the Board had no hesitation in pledging its support for the Festival.
Crawford added that DDL have been extremely pleased with the quality of the tournament and its management and will continue to support the venture.
Yussuf speaking on behalf of Ansa McAl said that they’ve always recognised the potential of the tournament and had no indecision in adding its support to the Festival, especially recognising the competence of the Board and the quality of the players.
“We wanted to ensure that all the players reach their full potential and even go on to make it a career,” Yussuf pointed out.
So Far, teams from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago have confirmed participation.
Meanwhile, members of the Local Organising Committee include Fernandes, Peters, Hooper, Chris Woodroffe, Lawrence Farley, Brian Asregado, Alisia Katideen, Dwayne Scott, Gregory Sills, Ivor Thompson and Rawl Davson.
