Chattergoon loses out, Ganga not on list
By Sean Devers
According to a reliable source close to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), 37-year-old Makeshift West Indies Captain Floyd Reifer is among 35 players to be offered retainer contracts by the WICB but his contract is for one for ‘Developmental’ players.
It is understood that the contracts will be divided into four categories ranging from “A” to “D” and Test player Sewnarine Chattergoon, one of the players who joined in the strike action against the Board has lost his contract.
The source disclosed that the contracts will be for one year and will be offered to several “developmental” players including Reifer who averages 9.25 in Tests and 14.62 in ODIs.
Former West Indies Captains Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, along with Narsingh Deonarine and Travis Dowlin are the Guyanese awarded contracts while it is understood that former West Indies youth Captains Guyanese Steven Jacobs and Leon Johnson are not on the list.
Inspirational Trinidad and Tobago Captain Daren Ganga is also not among the names mentioned for contracts which could be a hint to those who feel the former West Indies Skipper could again be chosen to lead the regional Team in Test matches with Chris Gayle being giving the leadership of the limited overs team.
Ganga, who leads T&T to tomorrow’s semi-finals of the Champions League 20/20 tournament in India, believes that the unity and team spirit shown by his team must serve as a warning to the warring factions within West Indies cricket. Unless the players and administrators can resolve their differences, Ganga believes it is “inevitable” that the region’s individual countries will seek to go it alone in the future.
Teenagers Kraigg Braithwaite and Andre Creary who were a part of the 1st Test squad to play Bangladesh after the senior players pulled out are also among the 35 and the list suggests that the WICB is rewards all of the players who opted to play in the makeshift team reward for their loyalty.
It is believed that The WICB will offer contracts to A-rated players (US$120,000 per year), B-rated players (US$80,000 per year), C-rated players (US$60,000 per year) and D-rated players (US$24,000 per year covering “developmental” players).
It is also understood that the West Indies players will also collect fees of US$5,000 per Test, US$2,000 per ODI and US$1,500 per T20 International.
They will also collect US$35,000 per day in sponsorship fees.
