…plea for public assistance in gathering evidence
The Commissioner of Police has been given the directive to aggressively pursue the investigations into the mysterious killings of what the opposition says were more than 200 Guyanese.
Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, said, yesterday, that he was not the Home Affairs Minister at the time but now the issue has been brought to light due to the case as it relates to Shaheed ‘Roger’ Khan in the United States of America.
According to Rohee, what will be dealt with are the allegations that point to criminality and the police have to investigate.
According to Rohee, people are going around saying, “200 black people” were killed. Should they have the evidence then they must give it to the police.
He was adamant that they can’t have persons walking around making statements that they know who killed the hundreds of persons
“Let these people provide the police with the information so that they could act on it…We need cooperation of people.”
He drew reference to persons traversing the streets with what they call the “Boards of Horrors’ depicting newspaper clippings with some of the many persons that have been slain over the years
The Police Force, in a statement last evening, called on all individuals, organisations or groups who may have information or vital evidence concerning these alleged murders involving the Fine Man gang, Roger Khan’s gang or any other gang or individuals who may be involved to come forward and provide whatever information or evidence that may be available.
Persons are advised to make contact with Assistant Commissioner Seelall Persaud at C.I.D Headquarters or call the following numbers: – 225-2227, 226-6978 or 225-8196.
The opposition parties for some time now have been calling for the investigation of the killings but the police force had held fast to their ground that they would have to wait for evidence emanating from the US law enforcement agencies.
Following the apparent reluctance of the police to launch the investigation the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), the National Front Alliance, (NFA) the Alliance For Change (AFC) and the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) recently announced that they formed an alliance to seek to force an investigation as it relates to startling allegations coming out of the Robert Simels trial in a United States Court.
Speaking on behalf of the grouping, WPA member Desmond Trotman, told media operatives that the parties were committed to meetings with civil society organisations, including trade unions, professional associations, religious bodies, private sector organisations, among others, in furtherance of the campaign.
He reported that at a meeting of the Opposition Parties on Monday last to discuss the unfolding revelations in the Robert Simels trial in the Brooklyn Federal Court in the US and the grave implications that such revelations have for national security and good governance in Guyana, it was agreed that a unified approach must be activated to realize greater accountability, justice, respect for and observance of the rule of law and, generally, the establishment of good governance practices.
According to the WPA member, they have agreed to compile a comprehensive dossier cataloguing the government’s human rights abuses, including extra-judicial killings, torture and complicity with known organised crime gangs and narco-traffickers and the resulting corruption in high office.
This dossier, he said, upon completion, will be submitted to local, regional and international bodies, including the courts with the appropriate jurisdiction, and released to the media and the public.
