One month after a bridge was built at Ocean Garden, Meten-Meer-Zorg, the residents are now saying that they did not get their money’s worth.
In fact, they are not surprised since they say that the bridge was built in a mere two days.
According to another resident, it was surprising that the bridge was completed in only two days and already the shoddy work is showing.
Speaking to Kaieteur News yesterday on problems plaguing the community, Julian Wesslen, a resident, claimed that school children have problems going to school whenever it rains.
“A truck stick here Sunday and whenever trucks pass here they always fasten up and the bridge is getting worse everyday.”
Wesslen, treasurer of a committee that was formed five years ago to oversee the village affairs, said the community needed assistance to solve various problems in the village. Wesslen further said that whenever he decides to bring certain problems of the community to the attention of the local authorities, the NDC Chairman, Mohamed Pasha, is “very non-co-operative.”
Last night, Pasha said that the bridge is not completed as yet and villagers had been warned that no heavy vehicles or trucks could use it. He claimed that contrary to what the residents are saying, it was only two weeks that works were completed on the bridge. He said that it was not a new bridge, but an old bridge being repaired.
However, he said that there is some additional work to be done to the road leading to the bridge. Earth was placed there and when this settles, crush and run would be laid on it.
Responding to questions why no signs were placed to stop trucks and other heavy vehicles from crossing, Pasha said the residents were told.
Still another resident, who only give his name as, M.S Rasheed, complained that “high daytime people are robbed and nothing is being done.
Drugs and other illegal things are being sold in this village and at Red Spot Street opposite the village, we need a police outpost in this area. We are paying $72,000 a month for street lights and we only have one street lamp.”
Residents also claimed that police despite being called several times for crimes, “would never come.”
