Executives of the Georgetown Cricket Club were yesterday the proud beneficiary of a cheque valued some 1.3 million dollars (Guyana) compliments of the UNICEF, in collaboration with Scotia Bank.
The Club earned the donation through its ingenuous input when the two donating agencies launched a nationwide project that included cricket clubs, under the auspices of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), to promote healthy lifestyles.
UNICEF has been designated the project monitoring unit and participants were tasked with a mandate to incorporate positive messages on the inculcation of healthy lifestyles against infection of the dreaded HIV and its concomitant parent AIDS.
The facilitators also juxtaposed sports injuries and prevention with the inculcation of healthy habits.
A total of 19 clubs participated in the exercise but in the end it was the Georgetown Cricket Club, with their ingenuous methods, that eventually impressed officials of UNICEF and earned them the monetary award.
Delivering short remarks during the handing over ceremony at the famous Bourda sward yesterday afternoon, HIV/AIDS officer of UNICEF, Ms. Monica Sharma revealed that the donation was accrued from a fund raising dinner held last year. She said that while there were concerted efforts to spread the message about HIV and its concomitant ill effects, by all of the participants, the GCC had stood out with ingenuous initiatives.
Ms Sharma also noted that even when funding for the programme dried up a bit, the officials of the GCC continued to carry the message which in the end acted as a fillip towards their eventual selection for the award.
Ms. Sharma subsequently urged administrators of GCC to extend their programmes to other institutions so that young people may engage in worthwhile and wholesome activity in their spare time.
“UNICEF will always be there to support you,” she assured.
Earlier, club representative and coach, Neil Dhanraj delivered a brief history of the club’s involvement in the programme.
He touched briefly on the initiatives instituted by his club while expressing gratitude to UNICEF and Scotia Bank for their chivalry.
