Talks between GuySuCo and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) are expected to recommence on Wednesday where negotiations will continue, according to GAWU’s General Secretary Seepaul Narine.
Narine said that the Union was contacted yesterday after all workers from the various estates returned to work, except those at the LBI Estate. The latter are maintaining that they are striking because the weekly target has not been set for them.
On Thursday workers from all estates joined a countrywide strike over wages increase after GuySuCo opted out of the talks.
Initially, workers of Diamond plantation had struck over the issue of pricing for clearing of beds and the movement of workers from Diamond to the LBI estate. Their colleagues in Demerara subsequently joined the strike action in solidarity.
This was then followed by a countrywide strike since workers felt their rights were being trampled upon by the sugar company.
The Sugar Company stated that it was willing to go back to negotiations once the union was willing to do so. General Secretary Narine had stated that the corporation, recognising that its target to produce 290,000 tonnes of sugar, as stated in the 2009 National Budget is far from realization, is attempting through its abrupt withdrawal from the negotiations and to blame the workers’ strike actions for the poor performance of the industry again, this year.
