The Ansa McAl-sponsored East Coast Demerara Premier League Football Championships continues this evening at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground where a riveting double-header is expected to captivate enthusiasts.
Golden Stars will tackle Bakewell Buxton Stars in the first game scheduled for 5pm with Ann’s Grove United battling eight-time winners of the East Coast League, Victoria Kings in the featured encounter scheduled for a 7pm start.
In the featured game, Victoria Kings will be looking to redeem themselves after suffering four defeats in the Guyana Football Federation and FIFA National Super League that has them tottering in the bottom half of the points’ table.
Nevertheless, Kings are still looking to win this year’s League after enjoying that position eight consecutive years before being dethroned two years ago. National Under-20 captain Calvin DeSouza will lead the ‘royal’ team tonight.
Andrew Holder, Kurt Adams, Kwesi DeSouza, Donald Lutchman, Orin Elias will support their captain tonight along with Rashleigh Morrison. The team’s defence will depend on a potent Shawn Samuels with support from Samuel Blackette.
On the other hand, Ann’s Grove may be armed with the element of surprise; therefore the team will not be taken for granted. The boys from “Punters” are usually super-fit and they are known for their aggressive styles of play.
Dwayne Rogers, Levin Adams and National Under-20 mid-fielder, Kevin Barry will help Ann’s Grove’s cause tonight, which will be to undermine Kings. The game will be as the pundits predicted-a battle of ancient football foes.
In the first encounter, Golden Stars’ Randy King along with Kwesi Halley and Jermaine Spencer will lead the team against Buxton-a team that already has one point following the draw against Plaisance. Stars are playing their first game.
Ansa McAl has pumped over $800,000 into this year’s tournament that has a total of eight teams competing for supremacy. Ogle has come in for Black Stallion, who were relegated after finishing at the bottom last year.
The tournament is being staged under the Mackeson Stout Brand and the other teams that are in contention include BV/Triumph United, Mahaica Determinators and Plaisance United. Last year’s champions, Buxton United opted not to take part in the League to focus more on the GFF Super League.
