A 38-year-old man described as a seasoned criminal was shot dead around 01:30 hrs yesterday in Lamaha Street, Queenstown while attempting to rob a taxi driver.
Police said that Junior Gardener, called ‘Awedese’, whose address was unknown, was fatally shot by a police rank, who had come to the assistance of the victim.
A police release said that Gardener was armed with a 16-gauge double barrel shotgun and was attempting to shoot the rank when he was wounded.
According to the release, a taxi driver was sleeping outside a taxi service when Gardner, who was armed, robbed the man of $5,000.
A scuffle ensued between the two men and another taxi driver who was nearby raised an alarm.
“A policeman who is also a licensed firearm holder came on the scene and the suspect pointed the gun at him causing him to discharge three rounds in the direction of the suspect who died before receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital,” the release said.
The shotgun is in police possession and the body is awaiting a Post-mortem, as investigations are continuing.
Law enforcement officials said that Gardner, who resided on the East Coast of Demerara, had several arrests and convictions for armed robbery and burglary.
