A vendor who claimed a doctor told her to used marijuana to help her asthma was fined $10,000 instead.
Audrey Briggs, 29, a mother of three of St John Street, New Amsterdam, was on Thursday ordered to do six months community service at the New Amsterdam Court.
The sentences were imposed by Magistrate Taejnarine Ramroop when Briggs appeared before him and pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of marijuana.
According to Prosecutor, Corporal Roberto Figueira, on September 27, the police after carrying out surveillance on a house at St John Street, raided the premises and found on a table a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana.
The woman who was there was told of the suspicion. The drug was weighed and found to be 25 grams.
She was arrested and charged. In court, Briggs told the magistrate she was sorry and begged for a chance. She said that she is a sickly woman suffering from asthma.
