Recognising the need to improve the teaching of Science and Mathematics in the education system, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Caribbean Academy of Sciences sponsored a science and mathematics workshop over two days. The workshop ended yesterday.
This workshop was geared at improving the teaching of mathematics and science in the school system.
It is to this end that secondary school teachers were engaged in a very interactive two-day workshop that drew participants from across the Caribbean region.
Giving an overview of the workshop at its opening at the Umana Yana, Wednesday evening, Dr Julianna Alexander, co-ordinator of the Caribbean Association of Science (CAC), said that it is tailored towards science and mathematics being taught through design activities, allowing students to think with their hands, eyes and ears.
The University of the West Indies lecturer challenged the participants to feed upon the skills and knowledge of each other to bring about better science and mathematics results.
She said it is no secret that these two areas are a sore point in the education system that needs addressing. It is to this backdrop that the idea of the workshop was born.
Dr Alexander charged teachers to make the teaching of mathematics and science more interactive for the students so that it is easily received by the students.
Delivering the feature address at the opening of the workshop, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said that the workshop comes at a time when the results of the two subjects at the CSEC are not that inspiring.
He said that he is hopeful that the workshop makes a difference and brings about better results in the subject areas. Hinds recalled when men first went to the moon it stirred great interest in science and technology.
As National Science Co-ordinator, Petal Jetoo, put it, the essence of science is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple.
