National Director of Sport Neil Kumar assured parents of the junior national Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) athletes yesterday that their children will be well-treated in Suriname while underscoring the need for them to show discipline.
Kumar along with Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Alfred King were speaking during a National Sports Commission (NSC) meeting that was held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to brief parents.
“We want to assure you that your children will be well taken care of. We have everything worked out.
We just need our athletes to be discipline but we are fully prepared to go and participate,” Kumar told the parents who attended.
“We will be supplying them (the athletes) with everything. We are not like some who go on tour and leave the children. Children are our greatest asset and we will take care of all of them,” Kumar continued to reiterate yesterday.
The Director of Sport indicated that, in his evaluation, Guyana has excellent chances of a title repeat in the male basketball competition. Kumar stated that similar results are likely in the male volleyball contest, in chess and cycling.
Guyana will also be fielding female teams in the basketball and volleyball events but will be defending its male basketball and volleyball titles. “We have a good chance of keeping the male titles in basketball and volleyball,” he said.
According to Kumar, there will be a few camps this weekend to strengthen the teams that will compete at the tri-nation event that includes host Suriname and French Guiana. “We will be having some extensive training,” Kumar noted.
Prior to his remarks, General Manager, Karen Pilgrim had perused to Team Guidelines in an attempt to clarify questions for parents. She covered areas including athletes’ ‘Travel’ ‘Dress, ‘Meals’ and ‘General Behaviour’ for the tour.
The NSC functions under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and King in his office as Permanent Secretary motivated the athletes when he told them that the honour of being given the chance to represent Guyana is irreplaceable.
“Your reward of being afford the opportunity to wear our national colours is an enormous achievement,” King commended, urging the parents and athletes to cooperate on the three key areas of sport: hard-work, commitment and discipline.
“If you do so, you will be able to realise your dreams,” King stated before Administrative Officer within the Ministry of Sport, Gervy Harry got around to mobilising some logistics for the October 15-19 tour to neighbouring Suriname.
