Old School vs. GT X1 match set for day of final
By Sean Devers
The 2nd annual Busta 20/20 cricket competition was launched yesterday at the head office of the Guyana Beverage Company in Diamond and President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Alfred Mentore lauded the Beverage Company’s commitment towards the development of local sport.
The competition is divided into 2 zones and attracts the 14 2nd division teams in the City. The opening round is scheduled for October 18 and Mentore told the gathering that yesterday was another good day in the life of the GCA and cricket in the Capital.
“This commitment by Busta shows their genuine interest in supporting the game locally at this very important learning period or grass root level.
It also signals strongly the role they play as a good corporate citizen especially in these crucial economic times. This speaks volumes of their passion, panache, love and deep understanding of youth and their development,” Mentore said.
The GCA Boss stated that 20/20 cricket is the newest and shortest format of the game and feels certain that the tournament will achieve the objective of producing cricketers to feed into the 1st division and National levels.
Robert Selman, Country Manager of Guyana Beverage Company said his Company is very pleased with the manner in which the competition was organized last year and this prompted them to come on board again this year.
“Guyana Beverage Company is the only beverage company that sponsors cricket in all regions across Guyana and we are very pleased with the response we have gotten from everyone,” Trinidadian Selman informed.
He disclosed that the Trinidad-based Company, who will soon be officially launching its new Trinidad Orange Juice, only gets involved in sporting and educational activities.
“We hope that our involvement in sports will help to keep youths away from crime and I commend the GCA and hope they continue their great planning and standards in this year’s competition.
Busta has sponsored cricket on the Essequibo Coast, Bartica, Wakenaam and Enterprise and Selman said that plans are now being looked at for a Busta Festival of cricket involving all of the top teams from the various Busta competitions competing in one tournament.
The GCA announced that to ‘spice up’ the competition on the day of the final, an ‘Old School’ team (comprising former players like the Harper brothers, Neil Barry and Reon King) will battle a Georgetown X1 before the final is played.
Zone A will comprise UG, DCC, Police, Everest, GCC, GYO, and Diplomats while MSC, Transport Sports Club, GDF, GNIC, Vikings, Ace Warriors and 3rd Class will compete in Zone B.
Two matches will be played at the same ground on each match day with the first match commencing at 10:00hrs and the 2nd game starting at 13:30hrs.
The top 2 teams in each zone will clash in the semi-finals before the final as GCC aim to retain their title.
