Eustace Cuffy appointed Defacto President of GABA
By Michael Benjamin
First Vice President, Eustace Cuffy has recently assumed the position of President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) following the resignation of Affeeze Khan from that portfolio.
Cuffy, who was elected as the First Vice President at the last Annual General Meeting (AGM) has been installed as the interim President in keeping with constitutional statutes. He was formally installed at a meeting attended by executives and representatives of the various clubs at the Olympic House. Peter Rose and Church Streets, Queenstown Thursday evening last.
At that meeting also, it was announced that a twelve member entourage consisting of 9 amateur boxers and three officials will leave Guyana shortly for a goodwill boxing tournament scheduled for Barbados starting on October 28. The airline tickets and accommodation would be supplied by the Government of Barbados through the Barbados Amateur Boxing Association (BABA).
The selected boxers are Imran Khan (51kgs), Ron Smith, Bert Braithwaite and Laurel Stuart (69kgs), Troy Billey (48kgs), Stephon Gouveia and Clairmonte Gibson (60kgs), Romeo Norville (91kgs) and Jermaine Daw (78kgs). They will be accompanied by Eustace Cuffy (manager) and James Walcott (coach). Ramona Agard will accompany the boxers in the capacity of referee/judge.
A source in the amateur boxing fraternity explained that the Bajan officials had made the offer to host the local contingent sometime during the presidential reign of Affeeze Khan. The source said that negotiations were stalled following Khan’s resignation from GABA. It was after the resumption of talks between the interim body and officials of the BABA, that the tour was revitalized.
The source further intimated that GABA officials have dispatched a correspondence to the Minister of Sports, Mr. Frank Anthony requesting additional financial support to offset the training expenses of the selected team. However, with the Minister out of the country, the officials are not yet certain if that assistance is forthcoming.
Meanwhile, Cuffy intimated that apart from discussions pertaining to the tour, GABA officials have also examined new ways to take the sport forward. He said that only a few executives were present at the meeting, stalling any discussions of future plans for the beleaguered association.
Cuffy said that he is not certain whether the other elected executive members are interested in serving out their terms. He said that he plans to convene an early meeting to ascertain this. “We also have some contingency plans in place if the other elected members opt out,” Cuffy disclosed. He said that several notable persons have indicated an interest to serve on the executive body but their appointments are constrained by the indecisiveness of current executives. The selected boxers have since gone into training in anticipation of the tournament.
