– implicates army lieutenant
Police are probing the suspected theft of army ammunition after detaining an ‘A’ Field, Sophia man with what an official described as “a large quantity” of 7.62x 39 rounds.
The ammunition is used in AK-47 and M-70 assault rifles.
A source said that police, acting on information, nabbed the man, who is in his fifties, in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market shortly before noon yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect has alleged that an army lieutenant, whom he identified, gave him the ammunition to sell.
He is being detained at the Golden Grove Police Station.
It is unclear whether the army officer has also been detained.
In 2006, 30 AK 47 assault rifles mysteriously disappeared from the Camp Ayanganna arms store.
About 18 of the rifles were recovered.
The majority were recovered from gunmen who were slain by members of the Joint Services.
