Dear Editor,
Just when one thought that the revelations about a government official’s alleged inappropriate behaviour with a minor had taken us to the bottom of the barrel in terms of what the government has to offer this country, the administration has unveiled yet another lowly aspect of its character, the ability to depress the depressed.
As a nation, we have often times expressed that we are “blessed” because we are not affected by natural disasters, the likes of which recently devastated the Samoan Islands and Indonesia. However, which of us could deal with such tragedy and despair, after being exposed to the daily torment that we Guyanese face from those who lead us.
No, it’s not pumps, sluices and contracts this time. It’s those given the responsibility to tell us of our progress – specifically the Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon and his new sidekick, Sharief Khan. What a calamity!
Now, even if one is inclined to bear up and listen to the plethora of lies which flow on a daily basis from the region’s most embarrassing administration and pathetic spin machine, who in their right sense wants to subject themselves to listening to an unkempt looking, uninspiring messenger while watching an equally unflattering individual at his right hand.
After 17 years in power, is this sorry sight what the Jagdeo administration believes the international community will be impressed by? How can we garner any sort of respect when our representatives appear to be disinterested even in themselves? Is this 21st century Guyana? Is this the future of our country? Don’t we have anything better?
To listen to one of these press conferences, which are among the most important the administration presents to its citizenry, is like offering oneself to be hanged or electrocuted. Slow, sometimes incoherent rambling, accompanied by a dull brown background, gives one the feeling that one is in a dungeon and the executioner is reading out the offences to you, the offender, before applying that death blow; that coup de grace.
Mr. Jagdeo is touting his low-carbon development strategy, and posing for the world, but I do believe that he is neglecting that which is happening right under his nose.
Thus, what are being fed is a group of low-impact messengers and low-life behaviour, not becoming of high-profile designations.
Spare us this torment, Mr. Jagdeo!
Michael Anthony
Is this oil a blessing or a curse?
