Pele and Santos recorded opening day wins as the Third Annual Banks DIH Masters Football tournament kicked off yesterday at three venues around the City.
While Pele and Santos worked hard for their points Rastafari Patriarchs and GT All Stars collected full points without breaking a sweat as their opponents, Starliners of the USA and El Dorado of Linden failed to show up.
In other results from yesterday, defending champions Notre Dame of Barbados were held to a 1-1 tie by Thomas United coming from behind. Georgetown Football Club and East Coast drew 0-0 with a similar result the order of the day in the East Bank Bombers of Barbados affair. Top Class (Linden) and Hearts of Oak of Berbice duel ended 1-1.
Notre Dame playing at the GFC ground drew first blood against Thomas United with a David Ward 17th minute goal but Wayne St. Jules denied the Bajans full points when he equalized for the local team. The Santos/West Demerara, GFC/East Coast games were also contested at the GFC ground.
In the lone game played at the Camptown ground, Kurt Alphonso sent Berbice into the lead in just the 3rd minute against Linden’s Top Class, who were able to show some amount of class and determination when they sneaked in the equaliser three minutes to full time in the 45 minute clash, two equal halves of 22 ½ minutes each.
Over at the Banks DIH ground Thirst Park, after a goalless first half, Pele sprung to life against the Western Tigers outfit. Pele banged in three goals within the space of nine minutes to seal the win. Eddie Carroll started the rout in the 30th minute; Rawle Jones was on target five minutes later with the third coming from a well taken free kick by Justin Bentick in the 39th. Pele won the free kick just outside the penalty box in front of goal and clinically put the ball away from the four-man Western Tigers wall and their diving goalkeeper.
Competition for places in the quarter-final round will continue today at the same venues with matches beginning at 10:00hrs. Tomorrow is the final day.
