The Cheddi Jagan International Airport Corporation (CJIAC) yesterday conducted a full scale Emergency Exercise simulating an aircraft crash at the airport.
The exercise, which saw approximately 300 persons participating in the exercise, was deemed a success by an on-hand seven-member Critique Team, a 25- member Observer Team as well as the Planning Team, made up of approximately 25 members, all of whom participated in the simulation.
Yesterday’s simulated crash outside of the aerodrome, saw various agencies such as the Guyana Defence Force, the Airport Fire Service, Customs and Immigration, city hospitals, the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and the Civil Defence Commission all playing various roles in the exercises.
The agencies collectively coordinated and executed the rescue, transportation and medical care of casualties and security at the crash site.
Chief Executive Officer of CJIA, Ramesh Ghir, also labeled the whole exercise a success, and made mention of the extensive meeting and planning put into organizing for this year’s simulation.
The airport had previously conducted exercises in 2007, again simulating an aircraft crash within the aerodrome.
In 2006 there was a simulated hostage situation on board an aircraft.
The Full Scale Emergency Exercise is required to be conducted by all international airports every two years by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to test the adequacy of emergency plans and procedures, emergency equipment and communication as well as the responses by all personnel involved.
