Residents of Middle Street, North Cummingsburg, are wondering about the source of a mysterious fire that started in a barrel in a bedroom.
Firemen, who have been hard-pressed fighting numerous fires over the past weeks, managed to contain the blaze to the bedroom but smoke and water left thousands of dollars in damage to schoolbooks and other property.
According to Elaine Singh, who was out shopping at the time, it was luck that saved the wooden home; and the fact that firemen arrived promptly.
A neighbour, Andrew Wilson, said that he was outside when a little girl ran out of the home with a DVD player. Shortly after there were screams of fire, he said.
However, attempts to enter the home proved futile since the smoke was too much. The barrel was burnt through at the bottom.
An occupant of the home, said that she was sleeping when she was alerted to smoke.
A frantic search in the home failed to find the source of the smoke. That was when a call was placed to the fire department.
According to one bystander, it was “amazing” how quickly the police responded.
