“We still have to discuss our options with the Union” GPL- CEO Dindyal
As the modernisation of Guyana Power and Light Company continues, there is the likelihood of more workers being separated from the company.
Word is that workers from the Generation Section of the company are those who may be affected by the separation process.
Reports are that once there is the link up of the transmission of electricity in certain areas, then there will be no need for workers at some sub stations. Onverwagt, Kingston, Sophia and Garden of Eden are some of the sub-stations that could see a staff cut. Meanwhile, General Secretary of National Association of Agriculture, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE), Kenneth Joseph, said that his union has not yet been able to confirm the dismissals.
He however noted that based on some conversation with senior official from the utility company he has “partially” confirmed this.
In the meantime, Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Power and Light Company, Bharat Dindyal, said that this may very well be one of the company’s options since GPL would be replacing and upgrading equipment.
Dindyal only specified upgrades at Sophia while noting that his company is yet to hold discussions with the union to decide on the way forward.
