A five wicket haul by left arm spinner Suraj Sookdeo and an unbeaten half century by Devindra Balgobin guided Walton Hall to a 9 wicket victory over Young Achievers in the final of the New Building Society 40 overs Cricket Competition played last Sunday at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground on the Essequibo Coast.
Young Achievers batted first and made 136 all out in 36 overs.
Chevraj Boodram and Deon Amsterdam were their leading run getters with 38 each as Sookdeo bagged 5-19 while Devindra Balgobin took 2-18 and Uvindra Balgobin 2-31.
Walton Hall in reply scored 141-1 in 27 overs winning the game by 9 wickets. Devindra Balgobin made 51 not out while Suresh Persaud supported with 46 and man of the match Sookdeo 19 not out.
Walton Hall received a trophy and $25,000 while runner up Young Achievers collected a trophy and $15,000.
Suresh Persaud with 170 runs was the competition’s leading batsman and Rajiv Manichand who took 20 wickets was the most outstanding bowler.
President of the North Essequibo Cricket Committee, Prince Holder thanked the sponsor, New Building Society for contributing towards their cricket. He also congratulated Walton Hall for winning the competition. (Zaheer Mohamed)
