Zone B Champions Wakenaam will clash with Zone A winner North Essequibo in the final of the Essequibo leg of the Neal and Massy 1st division 40 overs nationwide cricket competition.
In the final preliminary round matches played last Saturday, Wakenaam defeated Leguan by 132 runs, South beat Central Essequibo by 28 runs and North Essequibo overcame Pomeroon by 7 wickets.
In Zone B at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground in Good Success, Wakenaam batted first and scored 195-9 after the game was reduced to 35 overs due to rain. Essequibo wicketkeeper batsman Wayne Osborne top scored with 61 before he was run out while Chandreka Ragnauth contributed 47 and Roopnarine Persaud 23.
T. Narine grabbed 4-27 and Trevor Whyte 2-46.
Leguan in reply were skittled out for 64 in 14 overs. Former Essequibo U-19 player Kevin Gordon with 26 and Ravi Boodhoo 15 were the only batsmen that offered any resistance against the Wakenaam bowlers.
Former Guyana U-15 pacer Oyono Sampson, who bowled with some pace and picked up 3-14 along with former Essequibo U-19 player Roopnarine Persaud who bagged 3-28 and Guyana U-15 captain and left arm spinner Ricardo Adams 2-0, were the men mainly responsible for the damage.
In zone A at Queenstown, South took first strike and rattled up 197-5 in another game which was affected by the rain and reduced to 35 overs. Opener Norman Federicks, who has been named vice captain of the Essequibo four day team, scored 75 while Vijay Surujpaul made 38 and Royan Federicks 23. Henry Green took 2-30 for Central who were bowled out for 169 in 24 overs in reply.
Mohindra Boodram celebrated his inclusion in the Essequibo four-day team by smashing 95 and Rovindra Parsram made 23. Royan Federicks captured 3-28 and Guyana U-19 player Anthony Adams 2-17 for the winners.
At Cavaliers Ground in Pomeroon, the host took first turn at the crease and made 145 all out in 21 overs. Barry Alphonso was their leading run getter with 38 while Basil Persaud supported with 20 as Mark Tyrell grabbed 3-35 and Elroy Stephney 3-38. Punraj Singh and Uvindra Balgobin also took 2 wickets each.
North Essequibo responded with 146-3 in 23 overs. Navin Singh made a well played 58.
The date and venue for the final is yet to be decided.
