– prepares for 5k title defence Saturday
A late start at the Ventures 5km Road Race in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday may have robbed local distant athlete, Lionel D’Andrade from a podium finish. He admitted that he was late and ran from behind throughout the race.
D’Andrade told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the race was already started when he got to the starting line and, because he wanted to compete, he abruptly launched himself behind the field after the discovery was made on his arrival.
“I started late. The race was started but I was not at the starting point. If I had started with everyone I knew I would have won that race. It was my fault but I am not thinking about that now,” he said from the Twin Island Republic. Despite the blunder, D’Andrade finished fourth in the Ventures race with a time of 15:17 while local counterpart, Kelvin Johnson was third in 15:10. Trinidad’s Richard Jones won the race in 15:03 with Pamenos Ballantyne second in 15:05.
The athlete told this newspaper that he is scheduled to defend his 5k title on Saturday at a Ministry of Health Road Race. D’Andrade said the same star-studded field is expected to compete on Saturday and he will prove his point.
