Defies the odds from field of 260
It was sheer grit, determination and the belief that I can do that has enabled Guyana’s first Professional Bodybuilder Hugh Arlington Ross to qualify as one of four Americans for the 2009 Mr. Universe Bodybuilding Championships which is set for Southport, United Kingdom on October 24.
Chatting with Kaieteur Sport, Ross indicated that he felt great making the team but the challenges were many leading up to the selection process which saw some 260 athletes in contention at the trials last weekend.
Ross indicated that it was rather difficult mainly due to injuries, work and family commitments as well as a family emergency during the crucial final week of preparations which actually caused him to actually consider withdrawal two days prior to the event.
“However, I reminded myself as I always do, that difficulties are simply rare opportunities to help one realize what they are really capable of. After refocusing, I pulled out all the stops in those last two days and actually dropped eleven pounds within the final 24 hours. Of course that resulted in physical weakness but it enabled me to successfully complete that part of the mission.”
Ross, who was also a Powerlifting Champion in the USA, said he commenced training at a higher level of intensity the day after the trials since there is only five weeks of preparation time left before competition.
“My plan is to be a bit bigger but ultra shredded to the most miniscule detail.” (Franklin Wilson)
