Guyana is currently experiencing a prolonged dry season, and the Guyana Water Incorporated in an innovative move held its first “H2O Kids in Action’ workshop on Saturday last for the children of the entity’s employees to create water ambassadors.
Chief Executive, GWI, Yuri Chandisingh explained the aim of the exercise. “H2O Kids in Action was created to sensitize young people about the need to practice water conservation. We felt it was important to begin the programme at home, by inviting the children of our own employees to the first workshop. The GWI believes that through education, children can become ambassadors of the water company.”
“H2O Kids in Action” facilitated 45 children between the ages of 5 and 12. They were exposed to highly interactive presentations on the importance of water to the human body, the water cycle, water purification and conservation.
The participants were allowed to creatively express their understanding of water conservation in their homes and schools through designing posters, dramatic presentations and skits.
The “H2O Kids in Action” workshop forms a part of the company’s overall public education programme which seeks to foster awareness among customers of the dangerous levels at which water is wasted in Guyana. CE Chandisingh urged the participants to propagate the message of conservation to their parents and school mates. He told them “it is vital that we use the water provided by GWI for beneficial purposes only, especially when we have little or no rainfall. GWI also incurs a hefty electricity bill by pumping water from our production sites to your homes – every drop wasted means money lost to the Water Company.”
The second phase of the workshop would involve a tour of a GWI Water Treatment Plant and Chandisingh committed to further public education programmes to combat the wastage of the precious resource.
