Berbician Damien Vantull also included
West Indies players Ramnaresh Sarwan and Leon Johnson have been included in a Demerara 13-man squad to oppose Essequibo at Essequibo from Tuesday in the opening round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) 4-Day cricket competition.
The Rest team will play Berbice at DCC in the other scheduled game on Tuesday. Although without Skipper Travis Dowlin, who is in South Africa with a second string West Indies team, the Demerara batting is powerful on paper, especially with the availability of Sarwan who has not played for Demerara at the 4-Day level in a number of years.
Former West Indies Under-19 opener Rajendra Chandrika and National player Shemroy Barrington could start the innings with the versatile Christopher Barnwell batting in the middle order.
Apart from Sarwan and Johnson, former West Indies Under-19 Captain Steven Jacobs, ex-West Indies Under-19 player Gajanand Singh, Krishna Deosarran, Zaheer Mohamed, Joseph Perry and Troy Gonsalves gives the Demerara batting plenty of firepower.
Fast bowler Leon Scott gains a call-up, while Left-arm spinner Damien Vantull joins Singh (who plays for West Demerara side Mavericks) are the 2 Berbicians in the squad.
Vantull, who is playing for Malteenoes in the City, was the leading wicket taker in the Georgetown Cricket Association’s 2-day competition, the only 2 innings first division cricket in Demerara and is set to make his debut.
West Indies Under-19 selectee Trevon Griffith and National Under-19 pacer Seon Daniels are both in the stand-by list and should be automatic picks for the REST team while the other stand by players are former Test opener Ryan Ramdass, Vishal Singh, Wasim Haslim, Derwin Christian and Deon Ferrier.
The Demerara selectors have not yet named their squad to defend their One-Day title in the limited overs competition which is scheduled to commence on September 30.
Berbice won the last Inter-County 4-day competition in 2007 and this is the second year that the annual Inter-County 4-day format will not be played.
The Rest team is expected to be named today from the stand-by players of the three County teams.
President of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Bissoon Singh said that the Captain, Vice-Captain, Manager and Coach will be named at the Board Statutory meeting today but it is expected that Sarwan, who captained the West Indies four times and Guyana 9 times between 2006 and last year at the First-Class level, will be given the job.
Johnson and Jacobs, both former West Indies Under-19 skippers are contenders for the Vice-Captaincy position.
