An outstanding all-round performance from Tavindra Mangra who slammed 51 and took 5-34 failed to prevent Zeelught from a 2 wicket defeat to Vergenoegen in Sunday’s Quarter-final action of the Barakat Brothers West Demerara cricket competition.
And host and defending 20/20 Champion Meten-Meer-Zorg ‘A’ had their semi-final hopes washed out by rain when their match against Zeeburg ended prematurely after 6.1 overs. At that stage Zeeburg were 45-1. Both teams came into this game with equal points, but Zeeburg got the better of their rivals by having a higher net run rate.
The first semi-final is set for Saturday September 26 between Leonora and Zeeburg while the second semi-final, between Vergenoegen and Windsor Forest, will be played the next day. The final will be played on Sunday October 4 at Meten-Meer-Zorg West.
On Sunday last at Meten-Meer-Zorg West, Vergenoegen beat Zeelught by 2 wickets in the Quarter-final.
Batting first, Zeelught made 179-9 from their allotted 25 overs in the rain affected game with the 17 year-old Tavindra Mangra scoring 51. He was supported by Vickash Ramjattan (40) and Eon Singh (21).
Javid Shafeek (the leading wicket-taker in the competition with 16 wickets) picked up 3-34.
Vergenoegen in reply reached 180-8 in 23.4 overs. Kevin Boodie top scored with 61. Michael Goberdhan 28 and Mark Miller 21 supported with the bat for the winners.
Mangra returned with the ball to finish with 5-34 in a losing cause.
Meanwhile, the Barakat Brothers All Star team will take on New Line Cavaliers in a 20/20 match on Saturday October 3 at Meten-Meer-Zorg West for cash prizes and trophies.
