Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani has issued Arrest Warrants for three witnesses in the Preliminary Inquiry into the death of a Mahaica woman which occurred five years ago.
The warrants were issued at the request of Police Prosecutor Bernard Brown at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court.
On trial is Malika Barrington, who is accused of killing Shelly Archibald on January 2, 2004 at Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
Archibald sustained 11 stab wounds during a fight with Barrington, reportedly over a male.
Yesterday, three persons testified including two female police ranks.
One of the ranks, a Lance Corporal, testified of taking the initial report of the incident and arresting the suspect.
The other police witness testified about taking the suspect for medical treatment for wounds she sustained during the fight with the deceased.
The civilian witness, who was 14 years old at the time, gave testimony that he had accompanied the accused to the road where she was attacked by Archibald
They were all cross examined by senior counsel Bernard Dos Santos.
The warrants were issued for Charles Roberts, Desmond Pitt and Ernice Nicholson, who according to the prosecutor were served with summons to attend court.
However, sources in Mahaica have indicated that the witnesses have become frustrated at having to give the same testimony over and over in the matter.
At the time of the incident, the accused, who was initially slapped with a murder charge which was subsequently broken down to the lesser manslaughter, was three days short of her 18th birthday.
The matter was first heard before the now deceased Magistrate Jerrick Stepheney and evidence was given by at least two of the witnesses for whom the arrest warrants were issued.
After Magistrate Stepheney, Magistrate Rekha Persaud recommenced the matter and it was again aborted when she proceeded on leave.
It was then magistrate Yohhahnseh Cave’s turn and the matter was again put back when he was transferred. During this time the accused has changed attorneys.
She had first retained Lance Ferreira and is now engaging the services of senior counsel Bernard Dos Santos.
It is now up to Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani to see if he could conclude the matter.
And with the witnesses not turning up, it is anyone’s guess if this will be achieved.
The matter was set or further hearing on November 10.
