Another ‘white elephant’ has been revealed, this time at Kuru Kururu on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway. Residents informed Kaieteur News that the concrete structure was constructed approximately four years ago by the Government of Guyana under the President’s Youth Choice Initiative.
According to the residents, the structure was initially constructed to be used as a Community Youth Centre, but to date it has never been utilized.
One individual, who preferred to remain anonymous, and who lives in proximity to the structure, told this newspaper yesterday that the authorities had promised to equip the building with computers for the benefit of the children in the community, but that promise has not been fulfilled.
The resident also stated that the building was constructed at a cost of approximately $3 million.
At present, the structure is in a deplorable condition, as it has not been properly maintained.
Meanwhile, while this building has never been put to the use it was constructed for, a number of residents in the Kuru Kururu community have formed a committee, requesting donations from citizens for them to rehabilitate a dilapidated building, which will be used as a community centre.
One of the members of the committee told Kaieteur News that currently youths are utilizing the bottom flat of the library as a youth centre, but the space in the building proves to be a problem for them.
As such, the residents in the community have decided to rebuild the old structure to accommodate the youths, and to make them more comfortable.
This proposed community centre is expected to have a day care facility, along with providing craft making for those interested.
It would also include sports activities. Meanwhile, efforts made to contact the Region Four councilor in the community, to find out why the community youth centre was never put to use proved futile.
This newspaper was told that he is currently in the interior.
