Corporate support continues to pour in for Abigail McDonald as she prepares to face her sternest test at the World Scrabble championships in Malaysia later this year. Yesterday afternoon, the astute word former received two checks of undisclosed amounts from Guyoil and Evergreen Adventures to facilitate the trip. At a simple ceremony at the Guyoil Waterloo Street head Office, Castrol Brand Manager, Leonard Khan and Administration Manager/Company Secretary, Abdool Kadir handed over the sponsorship package to McDonald in the presence of former national champion, Fred Collins, President of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP), Moen Gafoor and Colin Chichester.
The group of word formers then wended their way to the Le Meridian Pegasus Hotel where Tour Operations Supervisor (Evergreen Adventures), Ms. Marsha Narayan donated a substantial package towards McDonald’s trip.
Both entities were loud in praise of the progress made by the GASP over the years and said that this was the primary reason that they have acquiesced to requests for support. Said Guyoil’s Brand Manager, “My organization have always been receptive to such activities and since the scrabble association has always demonstrated the quality necessary to garner support from Guyoil we are only too willing to come on board.” Mr. Khan further promised to render future support and told McDonald that her performance at the upcoming championships could be the catalyst to such corporate intervention.
Meanwhile, over at the Le Meridian Pegasus Hotel, Ms. Narayan assured the scrabble team that her organization is always willing to render support. She also wished McDonald all the best as she attempts to procure international accolades for Guyana. “I wish to endorse my organization’s support in this and future events,” Ms. Narayan said.
In response to the kind gestures, McDonald assured the executives of both entities that she would work assiduously to be successful at the world tournament.
