Daniel Lopes and Krystal Sukra were crowned the respective Boys and Girls champions of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association organised 14 and under Championships which ended on Sunday, at the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel Hardcourts.
In the Boys final, Lopes crushed Michael Munroe 6-1, while in the Girls segment Sukra cruised past Nicola Ramdyhan 6-2.
In semi-final action, Lopes defeated Seanden David Longe 6-1, while Munroe made it to the championship round by virtue of default when Gavin Lewis was forced to pull out of the tournament after suffering a wrist injury.
Sukra progressed to the final after blanking Aretha Dey 6-0, while Ramdyhan advanced at the expense of Africa Gentle, whom she beat 6-2.
Earlier, in the round-robin playoffs, (Boys) – Lewis, Lopes and David Longe topped their respective groups, while (Girls) – Sukra and Ramdyhan did likewise.
In Group A, Lewis finished unbeaten with 3 wins for a total of 18 points, while second place went to Dominic Fraser.
In Group B, Lopes, also ended without a loss, while Michael Munroe placed second and in Group C, David Longe and Shaquille Munroe advanced in that order.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, National Coach Shell Daly-Ramdyhan said that the tournament was organised as part of the ITF requirement to stage a series of competitions which could substitute in the absence of regional and international events.
“These tournaments serve to help the players remain active in the absence of overseas competitions and it is mandated by the ITF,” Daly-Ramdyhan disclosed.
The Boys and Girls 18 and under are expected to commence this weekend, at the same venue.
