As Joint Services Athletics C/ships loom
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) are preparing for a ‘ding–dong’ battle against the defending Joint Services Champions, Guyana Police Force when the 2009 Annual Athletics Championships is fired off this month end at Base Camp, Ayanganna.
Kaieteur Sport had inaccurately reported last week that the event will be held at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary. This newspaper has since learned that the GDF Ground located at the Base Camp, Ayanganna will host the marquee event.
The soldiers will be keen to prevent the police from taking advantage of them on their own turf, as result, the Guyana Defence Force are strategically preparing for the competition. Practice and other preparatory systems are already in place.
Sources close to the Sports Department of the Defence Force told this newspaper that they would not fall prey to all the “talk” of the Police Force but will be adopting a more disciplined approach that is aimed at regaining the overall championship.
The Police possess a distinct group of track and field athletes because a lot of former and current, junior and senior national athletes have since joined them. The Defence Force will definitely be up against it in the sprint events especially.
Their tactical skills and training will have to come to the fore to disarm the Police Force of their title. The Defence Force will have to consistently garner points from all the events while taking advantage of their strong areas such as distance running.
GDF also wins the March Past and Thug-O-War events and they have since received two seasoned distance campaigners and two club sprinters. The Defence Force will maximise the uses of these two athletes in an effort of securing maximum points.
Officials from the GDF Sports Department are adamant that they will be taking home the overall title this year because of their plan and secret weapons. The Police Force has already told this newspaper that they will be “easily” retaining the accolade.
However, the Police have stated that they will not be leaving anything to chance because they are aware that the Defence Force has been preparing for a title challenge a long time now. They said they are not taking the Defence Force for granted. (Edison Jefford)
