Nineteen year old Omarie Wharton was up to press time in a critical condition in the Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital after being struck by a pickup.
The accident occurred at around 18:45 hrs near New Hope, on the East Bank Demerara public road.
According to reports, Wharton was heading to his 277 Grove Housing Scheme home on a bicycle when a speeding grey pick-up slammed into him from behind. Lawrence Garden, a 22 year old friend of the injured teen, said he was riding behind Wharton when the driver of the pick-up overtook another vehicle.
The vehicle swerved and the driver lost control, and reportedly struck Wharton, who was flung into the air before landing on the parapet. The pickup ended up hanging over the side of a koker. Wharton reportedly was flung several feet into the air, and landed on the parapet. His bicycle is yet to be found.
Other reports stated that Wharton was riding across the road “to see something when the pickup hit him.
A passing minibus picked up the unconscious youth and transported him to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. He was later taken to the GPHC via ambulance where he was up to press time described as critical.
