The Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) have launched a raffle to raise funds to send a national champion, Abigail McDonald to the 2009 World Scrabble Championships scheduled for the Zon Regency Hotel in Johor Bahru, Malaysia from November 26-29.
McDonald earned the right to represent Guyana after she dethroned former national champion, Fred Collins 3-2, at the Ocean View International Hotel ECD, earlier this year. In an effort to procure the required sum to address the financial requirements, GASP has organized the raffle to facilitate the trip.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, President of GASP Moen Gafoor intimated that at the moment GASP is devoid of adequate funds but would like to field a representative to the prestigious competition. He said that the raffle would be launched sometime next week. Gafoor intimated that already several business entities have acquiesced to requests for prizes for the raffle. Yesterday afternoon, King’s Jewelry World, through its Director, Rohandev Persaud donated a Citizen’s Eco drive wrist watch towards the raffle. Mr Gafoor and another executive member, Colin Chichester, received the donation on behalf of GASP.
Mr Persaud said that his organization is extremely delighted to contribute to the sustenance of the sport. He admitted that he nurtures a love for the game and even engages in unofficial competitions at home.
“King’s Jewelry World believes that scrabble has the potential to enhance the literacy level and it was with this in mind that we have decided to render support,” said Persaud. In response, Gafoor and Chichester relayed their gratitude to the King’s Jewelry executive while promising to work strenuously towards the development of the sport. “I wish to welcome King’s Jewelry on board and commend them for supporting our programme,” said Gafoor. “I wish to express our heartfelt thanks to your organization for such worthwhile corporate assistance,” Chichester emphasized.
Among some of the other prizes up for grabs in the raffle are, one refrigerator, an X-box 360, a trip for two to Baganara Resort, a Bird cell phone, and DVD players among others.
