Good Success SC defeated Sans Souci Jaguars SC by 36 runs to win the Sandra Matthews sponsored 40 overs cricket match played last Sunday at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground in Good Success.
The home team won the toss and elected to bat first in a game which was reduced to 30 overs due to a late start. Openers Imran Khan (20) and Shamsudeen Mohamed (11) added 30 for the first wicket before Khan was brilliantly caught by Zaheer Mohamed at long on off medium pacer Javed Khan in the 7th over.
Good Success then lost Chandreka Ragnauth (9), Youganand Balgobin (8), Shazim Mohamed (1) and Shamsudeen to be at 70-5 in 12 overs. Nazeer Mohamed who has been included in the Essequibo 4-day inter county team and allrounder Keddernauth Narain joined forces and shared in an unbroken 6th wicket partnership of 171.
Mohamed who crafted an unbeaten 101 which included four sixes and ten fours and Narain who was not out on 31 (4×4) entertained the crowd with a wide array of shots both sides of the wicket as their team ended on 241-5 when their 30 overs expired. Former Essequibo U-15 player Nokta Moses ended with 2-22 while Moin Khan took 2-17 and Khan 1-34 for the Jaguars.
The visitors started their reply badly losing Heera Sukram (5) at 10-1 in the 2nd over.
Javed Khan and Charles Benjamin then added 80 for the second wicket before the latter was bowled by Chandreka Ragnauth for 37. Former Essequibo U-19 player Olwin Paton joined Khan and they continued to keep their team in the hunt with aggressive batting taking the score to 140 in 18 overs. The dismissal of Khan LBW to Ragnauth for 40 triggered a mini collapse for the Jaguars as they lost three more wickets in two overs which severely affected their victory chase.
Paton was then joined by Zaheer Mohamed (18) and the pair put together 25 runs for the sixth wicket taking the score to 180 in 25 overs before Paton was LBW to off spinner Nazeer Mohamed for 35 as the host put themselves in a comfortable position. The visitors eventually ended on 205-8 off their allotted overs. Ragnauth, Mohamed and Khan took two wickets each for the winners who received the winning trophy while the Jaguars collected the runners up prize. Mohamed was named man-of-the-match.
At the presentation ceremony, Ms. Sandra Matthews, who is an overseas based Guyanese, thanked the teams for participating and encouraged the players to take the game seriously.
